Indian Boarding Schools: Past and Present

This course examines the role of off-reservation boarding schools as a tool to assimilate American Indian children into the dominant culture. Topics include the history of boarding schools, federal education policy toward Native Americans and the experiences of American Indians who attended off-reservation boarding schools. The focus is specifically on the Sherman Indian High School boarding school. Participants will tour the Sherman campus and museum and visit the off-site Sherman Indian School cemetery.
